2 oz Vodka (A clean, neutral spirit. Wheat or potato, your call; either works when frozen.) Lemon peel or no garnish (Optional. Most traditional versions are served straight.)

Use the freezer, not ice

A frozen shot is not a chilled shot. The vodka needs at least four hours at -18°C; colder than that is better. A frosted glass is the sign the pour was cold enough.

Method

At least four hours before serving, place the vodka bottle in the coldest part of the freezer.

Chill two 2 oz shot glasses in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Pour the vodka into the frosted glasses. Serve immediately, in one sip.

Story so far

The opener

The vodka goes into the freezer the morning of. By the time guests arrive it is thick, almost syrupy, and the small glass it is poured into frosts over in the second it sits on the table. There is nothing to this drink except cold. That is the point.
